NO ANDRETTI, NO PARTY!
Today F1 has announced that they have rejected Andretti's bid to come into the sport. So what's the reasoning?
Well, they're looking at this as a strategic alliance and the FIA has said that Andretti does not bring enough to the table to warrant them being an 11th team. This is an indicator that they believe that their participation in the sport will bring Andretti more attention than the other way around. So how much of this is true?
Let's take a look at the Andretti brand and where it stands. For those who might not know Michael Andretti raced for McLaren in 1993 for just 13 races. A short-lived career but one that was followed by participation in various other motorsports. The American has since been trying to start his team in the sport with the help of Cadillac. An exciting new venture for the sport when there is a calling for more drivers to be on the grid with the amount of talent available.
The response from Formula 1 fans is on par with that of Andretti. It seems like the FIA is the only party that thinks this move is not the right one. With sparks of outrage from fans and Andretti alike, I can't think of a better time to start asking questions about their selection process. This is amidst other teams having sister brands like Red Bull with the new Visa Cash App RB and with teams falling behind the order like HAAS. This begs the question what do those teams have that Andretti & Cadillac don't? Nothing against those teams but if we are to take their reasoning and apply that to current teams it seems like there are some inconsistencies.
The FIA will have to begin to consider being more strict with the teams on the grid or more open to potential newcomers. I think most fans will want more drivers or more teams in the grid. Teams that can challenge year after year to make the sport more competitive.
